I spent 3 months working at a summer camp for children and adults with disabilities. I was assigned between one and 3 campers every week, depending on the level and type of care that was required.
I dealt with a wide range of disabilities over the course of the summer, including physical disabilities, developmental disabilities, learning disabilities, mental health issues and illnesses. I also gained experience with seizures.
We spent 22 hours a day with the campers and attended to all their care needs. This included lifting and transferring, feeding, attending to personal care needs including washing, showering, changing, toileting, dressing and dental care, dealing with behavioural difficulties. In addition to this, we assisted campers in attending and enjoying regular camp activities including camp outs, canoeing, swimming, horse riding, arts and crafts and archery.
I also have personal experience in helping to care for an infant with cancer and a child with a heart condition and autism.
I loved the work that I did over the summer, and found all of the people I worked with amazing. I would love the opportunity to carry on with this kind of work, as I find it incredibly rewarding and fulfilling.
