Hello. My dad is a busy 86-year old, still very capable, still driving, but he has been diagnosed with multiple myeloma and recently was hospitalized with diverticulitis and an infection. He suffered delirium while in hospital, which has cleared up but my sister and I want to make sure we’re providing him with a safety net for his physical health. He also has some forgetfulness, but no dementia as yet. Due to his suppressed immune system caused by the treatment for his rheumatoid arthritis we’re told he is likely to suffer more infections in the future. If we can catch them early enough we can hopefully avoid hospitalisation and any more bouts of delirium, or at least be ready for them. The problem is, he’ll tell you he’s fine! Not until he’s on his last legs will he admit he’s ill. He is very kind, so he wants to care for everyone else, but that means he struggles to admit when he’s feeling bad. He also forgets to look after some basic things, like cutting his toenails, cleaning his hearing aids, etc. So what we need is a professional person, ideally somebody with some medical training, who can develop a boundaried but friendly relationship with dad and check on his health once a week. We need somebody who is comfortable doing both simple caretaking jobs, has good medical knowledge and is comfortable performing an over-the-counter UTI test one a week and a basic physical check-in. Pay will great for the right candidate as we know it’s an unusual job. Your choice of hours is up to you as long as it’s the same time every week so he can have it in his diary and its easy to remember.
