I am posting this for a friend, Rhona in Weald, Bampton, who has been severely disabled with ME for over 20 years. I have posted in the Elderly category because the options on care.com in this category best match Rhona’s needs but she is actually 49 years old. Rhona retains a good sense of humour and balanced attitude; she has coped incredibly with losing nearly all of her independence and abilities. Nevertheless her life and ability to do even basic things for herself is very constrained. With ME it is the amount of activity she can do which is affected, even jobs such as the washing up are too much, so her home can sometimes appear to have basic household jobs left for several days because Rhona doesn’t have the strength to do them. Similarly phone calls and basic admin are too much for her and having someone who can just make a call for her and solve a problem would be ideal. One of the biggest challenges with ME is that patients can appear fine, or almost ok for very short periods of 10 minutes or so, and then suffer significant relapses for days as a result of very short period of minimal effort such as simply talking. Patients can often be disbelieved or suffer from expectations from others that they must be able to maintain activity (such as talking) beyond the short time they can do. This can also make communicating what needs to be done tricky, so we’re looking for someone who is pro-active and can cope if the other person can’t speak to them as much as they might expect. I think overall in Rhona’s case she needs someone who won’t need Rhona to participate in the care or interaction in her home and can understand that every movement and word Rhona has to undertake is making her more ill. To be conformed but I believe Rhona is looking for someone for a couple of hours once a fortnight in an afternoon. Thanks so much to anyone who can help.

More info below:- We are looking for some hourly care support for my elderly mother - initially two hours a day if available - one hour in the morning and if possible one in the evening as well. Overview - My mother is 88 and is beginning to struggling with some aspects of self-care. He short term memory is slipping, although long term memory is reasonably sound. She lives alone in her own house in Oxfordshire. Type of help sought - getting dressed, light cooking and laundry, some housekeeping and company I am going into hospital at the end of this week and am anxious to find some additional support whilst I am away to start as soon as possible. We would like the care support to continue afterwards.

Help with getting up and general care. Up until very recently this lady was energetic and active but now needs help due to shortness of breath. Very pleasant modern house with all amenities.
